Kagoshima is the place where the brave Satsuma samurai grew up. Headquartered in Kagoshima Castle ,there were many samurai house district called FUMOTO in various parts of the domain in the early modern period ,and it placed close to the medieval mountain fortress.

In 2019, 95 cultural properties around Kagoshima Prefecture across nine municipalities were recognized as a Japan Heritage Site named “Defence Network of Satsuma Samurai Districts in the Edo Period.
