Strategic Port and Stronghold of Southern Koshikijima
Teuchi Fumoto is located along the edge of a curved bay in the southern part of Koshikijima island. During the Edo period, the Satsuma domain had 24 lookout stations for approaching foreign ships, and a modern recreation of a lookout tower rises above the town today. Round stones collected from the nearby beach form the stone walls demarcating each house, and hedges of exotic tropical plants and flowers adorning them give the town a uniquely southern Japanese charm.
